Plan for Daniel Neilsen

by Daniel Neilsen · 02/18/2003 (6:42 pm) · 8 comments

I thought it was time that I posted an updated .plan even though there is really not that much happening.

All three of my TGE projects have been shelved and will most probably be scrapped simply due to the fact that the alphas failed to capture enough interest from the public to make it viable for me to waste my time any further.
(This includes Trakers: Bid for Glory, Chaos Hunters, and my other project that never got named)

I am pretty much doing a whole lot of nothing at the moment in relation to coding. I have just formed a new band and am learning bass (I previously played lead guitar) so it is a new experience and I get to be the "funky bass dude" LOL. Its pretty shweet cause the lead guitar position is being taken over by one of my ex guitar students which is a bit of a head spin :)

Aside from that I have started thrashing Diablo II again and really, having fun at my computer for the first time in a long while.

Thats about it I guess.

After Edit:

I just realised that I do have something veyr important I should say to all the non-Australians out there. (LOL In case you are wondering this is a partial joke...)

How to Eat Vegimite
It has come to my attention that vegimite has got a bad rap in other countrys around the world but, maybe its because other peoples dont know HOW to eat vegimite? The simple fact is that vegimite will taste like crap in large amounts. You cannot spread it an inch thick like you can with jam, peanut butter, etc. It will just taste horrible.

Try this:
Make some toast and coat it with margarine/butter. Then spread vegimite very fine'ly across the toast.
That is how it should be eaten

Sorry to hear about the projects. It's always a bummer when that happens.

Doh ! Are you serious Daniel ? I was really busy making my own game but when I tryed Trackers, I said to myself "Wow, this guys is really good at scripting torque !". You probably don't remember but I had started a server and you came to it and I've told you that I wanted to look throu your scripts and you answered that this was ok. Really gentleman. It was 4 months back :) There is really cool things in that game and lot of those are very impressive. The game itself was fun and the idea of getting better by not only shooting, etc ... was revolutionary for an FPS. Really deceiving to see a skilled coder stopping his projects :( But you have your reasons so I won't go into moral :) Good luck with your band. It's the funniest job on earth "musicien". I did that job for 13 years of living and I miss it really bad.

OH, vegimite :) I'll maybe try it one day, but not today :) Thanks for the infos !

It's a real shame you scrapped your projects. I really quite liked Trakers (and the fact nobody knew how to pronounce it at the IGC). But good luck with your music :)

And what the heck is Vegemite. Sounds like a vegetable based explosive ;) Don't recall ever seeing it here in the UK, but maybe that's because I don't have a weapons license ;)

Daniel,

I actually thought the 3D subspace game was on its was to being very good. A little more polish and I think it could have been released as a paying title. Have you thought about going back to that project and finishing it up?

Quite sad to hear that Daniel. I can understand if youve got a bit of the old burnout feeling. But you know youre stuff when it comes to torque. Perhaps it was just that youre project (especially trakers) was pretty close to what quite a few people have been attempting.

Its hard to differentiate your game from so many others. Thats not to say you shouldnt continue developing though.

Try and find something that you can make for YOU to enjoy, that wouldnt take forever and try and get the feeling of finishing (one of the best feelings).

I think the problem with Trakers was that, to the typical user that dosnt know any background of the game, it looked just like a run of the mill FPS game.

Its not until you actually get into the game and the role playing aspects of building your character that it starts to shine but no-one was getting that far. People would load it up and say "woohoo, another FPS" and press quit. It just didnt catch peoples interest.

As for Chaos Hunters (The subspace clone), the original alpha on the 2d plane absolutely sucked for gameplay. It was really bad. The second alpha when we used flyers in a 3d terrain was better but the problem of a multipler game is getting people interested enough to actually play it. Once again, lack of interest meant that it just wasnt worthwhile.

I think that multiplayer only games have to be extraordinarily good to get public interest and unless you have a professional team that can hire the type of artists to do that, I just dont think it can work.

I guess one of the main reasons its not working out is the simple lack of modellers and, nowadays, unless you can make a game look good people will just pass it by :(
I even tried learning to model myself but I seem to be artistically challenged :/

I dont think I would want to create a game again cause trying to get a team together with no money is really an impossibility when you are so far away from things (Australia)

Note:
Vegemite is a vegetable extract spread that you make sandwiches and things out of. Like jam, peanut butter, etc

Australia isn't that far away :-P.

Daniel. i feel for you bud, I really do. Its not like most of us are snowed under with modellers either :))

But for something like the subspace game, you could easily get spacecraft models, Ive seen many spacecraft models in model packs on the net for very llittle cash (30 dollars or so).

I know what you mean though, its hard to get people interested in a game without all the flash graphics. But then, how do all these puzzle games on the net sell?

Perhaps instead of thinking about the "typical" game, its better to think of something that doesnt require too many graphics.

Ive got idea's that will fly without too many custom graphics just waiting to be done. Having said that, I do have the opportunity to pay for graphics if I really need to.

There's not an obvious solution to youre problem Daniel, I'm just sad that its come to this for you, I hope you dont abandon games altogether. Youre welcome to come and work with "the lads" on Realmwars ANY time. :)
