Orc Creation Kit??

by Bobby Leighton · 09/06/2013 (12:36 pm) · 9 comments

So this might turn into something if there is enough want for it. After being part of the community here for the better part of a decade I have noticed that we have moved away from Kork the Orc, and moved to the soldier model as the standard for the Torque Game Engine. Well I don't know about anyone else, but I miss having an Orc! So I have started designing one, and this is the first iteration. Now when I finalize the model I plan on making several different looks as well as physically damaged model parts that look injured, as well as weapons, and clothing of different types. So if anyone has any comments, questions or suggestions please let me know here, or at my email. Thanks for taking a look, looking forward to see what people think.

I think you should call him Levi as in Leviathan. If Kork was floating on the water, then Levi (Leviathan) is certainly a much larger ocean vessel. The name Levi is also four letters like Kork. So it could be Kork's much larger cousin Levi.

It looks awesome btw. You could certainly use it to do a series on baking higher res textures on lower poly models as well. Some people don't seem to get that. Maybe do a series on how to build this guy. It could be a way to advertise your model(s).

He looks awesome, one idea for what you could do:
Add small tutorials for how to do different stuff like, how to make the player play an animation, how to do blended animation etc. Thats really requested atm afaik. Doesn't have to be a lot tho..

Also mesh swapping! So you can equip your orc with beards or stuff like that.

Edit:
Another thing, it could be pretty cool to also have a set of sci-fi armor for him, just a single set would be enough. Something along the lines of this

Thank guys!

@Lukas: I was thinking about some tutorials to go with it. Perhaps baking like what Demolishun was talking about...thought about Animation but Im not really that good at it. Great idea though!....and yes Sci-fi orc will be in works for the pack;O)

Great idea Bobby! I'd grab this for sure. One thing though, and I'm assuming this is a WIP, but I hope you'll be adding detail in both the mesh and textures. For example, he really needs tusks. The loincloth needs some fabric folds etc., and his skin is a bit too uniform for my liking. Some skin tone variation would dramatically improve the overall look. Not sure what level your art is at on that front though.

Another slight criticism I have (yeah, I do that) is his body is too well proportioned for a typical ork. In my opinion, he should have more of a primate gait. Something like this or this. That's just my personal taste though. To me, your ork, while great, just doesn't seem very orkish. Hope these comments haven't come off as too critical though.

Oh yes just a WIP, there will be full detail, going for Mordor half breed ork like LOTR kinda....
This is really just Orc_Base, meaning he was intended to look plain for an ork, that way I could make all his brothers just by changing him or adding detail...and yeah he is still a little too much human, and yes there will be teeth variation(tusks and such), i just want the kit to make any type of orc you want. So hopefully you open the ork kit, and this appears with sliders letting you change his body type and other Morph targets too.

I really appreciate all the help guys, feel free to keep it coming:O)

That looks great. I'm very interested when it is in a fantasy setting.
