Warscale 82 - Merry XMas!

Hi everybody!

This should be my last post this year. I hope everybody had a good year and I specially wish this year GarageGames will come back stronger and better.

This week I wanted to make 5 sorceries but many things got into the way. The most important is that my son got a stomach virus and he has been quite ill. He is better now but we are still taking turns with my wife to take care of him. Of course that takes time out of Warscale.

Second, I managed to create two of the spells when suddenly I noticed it has become noticeably difficult to handle all the spells in the store. So I was forced to go back and solve a couple of bugs I had in queue and add a new spell filter which allows to (ehem) filter the spells by element. This is specially important as the avatars are element limited so you must be careful while picking your spells.

And to complement the filters, I included an element column in the different editors so the spells can be sorted by element too.

Shatter
So the first new spell which was implemented was this one. This one is a very simple spell and required few adjustments to the game.

It was basically derived from the Magic The Gathering spell of the same name. The idea was to have a quick and dirty way to deal with artifacts and indeed, is the only way to destroy a Guardian Angel which is virtually indestructable.

Now this is an interesting spell. I was really keen into pushing the new adjustments in the spell engine to test more complex chaining of effects. In this case, this spell has 4 effects. Automatically pick your avatar, drop all the cards in your hand, drain all your mana and dray new spells. This one helped me fixing some minor bugs here and there but the engine held strong. I'm still in doubt about the power of the spell. Just 4 mana and draw all your hand again. Of course the trick is that you are left with no mana and you need to wait your next turn to replenish. Time will tell how useful this spell is.

Future spells
Ok, now I was really prepared to continue making spells but interestingly enough the new element filters allowed me to review how many spells on each element I currently have. This is the count (not counting 35 artifacts):
Fire : 9 spells
Water : 4 spells
Air : 4 spells
Earth : 5 spells
Life : 14 spells
Death : 11 spells

That is 47 spells which are badly distributed as you can see. The funny thing is two of the new spells I was going to create were Life spells so even when interesting I decided to drop them for now. So the next spells coming are:

Water Form (Water): Target creature gains +15 attack, +30 defense, +3 move while standing in a water tile.
Fire Shape (Fire): Target creature gains +2 attack for each fire tile in the game board.
Distract (Air): Target creature or avatar shifts down 5 positions in the initiative table.
Time Flies (Air): Target avatar and all his creatures shifts down 5 positions in the initiative table.

I like the first two. Even when the spells are similar, the water version is more controlled, but the fire version can be deadly in the proper setup. This spell calls for a wizard to counter it by using the Staff of the Lake which turns tiles into water.

Thats it for now. Good luck with your projects!

Feliz Navidad!

I've been reading your blogs for a long time and I was just curious as to how you come up with the art for your cards?

Just royalty free stock images you can find in many places and lots and lots of patience to search and browse countless crappy art. Not like this art is superb but at least holds its place.

Hint: Look at the artist credits on each card.
