Today, InstantAction informed employees that it will be winding down operations. While we are shutting down the InstantAction.com website and Instant Jam game, Torquepowered.com will continue to operate while InstantAction explores opportunities with potential buyers for Torque. We thank all of our past and current customers for their support.

Hi,

Am posting this from my personal account, created during my initial foray into Torque. Been using the product for a while now, from TGE 1.4.x till the latest T3D. Can't say it's the best or easiest engine to use, but it's been paying the bills for years. It's unfortunate Torque is in its current state, but I think a lot of people has seen this coming ever since Unity goes Windows and UDK goes public.

Good luck on your future endeavors.

Well that is life. Hate to say it, but I think GG lost its way years ago when the founders sold to IAC. There is no doubt now that Unity 3d is the game engine of choice for the independent developer.

Seems like this is the biggest news yet.

Saw it Coming in 2008

I can say that all the GG employees did well and will continue to do well. snipped by moderator

I just got the green light for a new project based on T3D.

It is a kiosk app with wii remotes connected devices.

It was in competition with a Kinect based concept.

I'm glad I choose T3D for its multi-platform capabilities (because I made the kiosk run on Mac mini platform) and its access to source code, which enabled me to plug wii remotes with the engine.

I hope now I can continue to invest in Torque products (I was waiting for Luma Racing Kit, T3D up to date on Mac and iT3D for iPhone).

Unfortunately once sold most software goes into a downward spiral... This is the only indie friendly software I could find... Does anyone have suggestions of affordable software that has similar power to T3D? Please email me gm@strataus.com.

Thanks,

@Britton - Wow...Thanks for all that compassion and well timed promotion of our competition. As a reminder, Torque is not dead. IA may have closed, but the Torque unit continues to be a competitor. Your posts in this blog are not appreciated. Saw it coming + go use the competitor is a poor comment in these times.

@Gerret - The current has not fallen on Torque. Be patient and see what happens next.

Torque 3d is still years ahead of it's time compared to other game engines. You are also forgetting how much it costs for some of those other engines to get source code compared to torque. Torque3d is also very flexible with it's ability to launch through the web, single player, or massive-multi-player online role playing game. I think torque has plenty of life left in it and is still perfect for the indie gamer.

@Michael, my apologies. I thought that the same was true of the Torque employees as the instant action employees. I'm glad you are still there.

As far as Torque goes I think it is good technology, and I hope it remains a viable competitor in the indie market.

@Michael,

Remember, no matter what happens you and all the other GG employees are what makes torque great.

The true value is in the human resources. You have marketable skills, and if things don't work out here, then I hope you don't let the independent gaming dream die. I hope you find work in the same arena and help keep the dream alive.

Please excuse the bad english.

@Briton, some game developers wish simply to use some tools in order to design their game but others developers want also contribute to and customize their tools. There is no other engine than Torque and its sources which allow it at an advanced level.

I continue to think Torque is the best also for this.

@Jean-Louis,

I've always been an advocate of torque, I'm just really upset by the bone headed move at the parent company IAC. They have no idea how to run a gaming company. And unfortunately this is hurting something I love.

My heart goes out to the GG crew. I hope that they find the right investor to take leadership of such a great product.

Jean is right. T3D's product is better that Unity's. I am not comparing the engines but the stuff you get for the price. As long as unity doesn't offer the full source code for a reasonable price (1000 - 1500 USD) it won't beat Torque. Serious developers will value the source code than the tools. Because the source code gives you freedom in development.
Many of us have also come used to T3D's source code. Even if Unity offers its source code for a good price we won't move to another engine.

Just wanted to say that my partner and I are developing a game with TGB, and plan on going to PC, Mac, Ipad, Iphone, and maybe Wii and Xbox. We are both industry pros with over 12+ years experience each. Lot to be said for a solid, functional engine with source, and good multi-platform support.
To any potential investors, torque is a diamond in the rough. Continue to tighten up the engineering and improve the docs/examples, and it will shine and be viable in the market, for sure.

any potential investor would be crazy not to pick up Torque, It has a huge following and blows the other engines out of the water. It's the engine of choice for many of the universities and with several books behind it and updated docs gives it a solid foundation. There's room for future growth that's for sure and implementations of api/future tech will only make the engines stronger.

Personally I wish I had the money to buy torque because if I did it would already be bought.
