GDNet Behind the Scenes: Wiki Logo

Not much to report this week from the GDNet operations center, so I figured I'd take you all on another back-stage tour instead. Previously I went over how I format articles for publication and compile the weekly newsletter, this time around I'm going to share the various versions of Wiki logos that we designed before settling on the final one that you see on the Wiki today.

This first rendition was Richard's (superpig) idea to get things started, taking the G logo and having multiple hands tracing it out to show community. I didn't really get that part so when I simplified it I used only one hand in my own mockup:

After Richard pointed out the whole multiple-hands-meaning-community thing and I was like "ahhhh", Seyi came along with this sketch:

The problem with this one is that there's quite a bit going on that doesn't translate so well when you shrink it down to the size needed to fill the Wiki logo spot.

You'll have to ask Seyi "why green?" for this one because his next mockup thought to combine the original Space Invader logo with the GDNet logo and if you look closely you'll notice a few missing tiles in the Space Invader, which was supposed to signify community building.

Then Richard came back once more with an actual take on Seyi's first concept, using a crane and builders hat for community building and still including the original Space Invader logo. John then piped up with the suggestion to lose the crane and stick a wrench in the Space Invader's "hand"

However no one actually got around to doing that so in the meantime Seyi came about with his third mockup, mixing in a bunch of other ideas tossed around. This is the logo that you see on the Wiki today and to be honest I don't think I ever did ask or get an answer to the question
