I suppose when Life "gets in the way", the proof of your passion for game development is whether or not you pick up where you left off regardless of elapsed time. I hope so.

"People of the Dawn" went on hold a while back when I teamed up with Marcos (Novack) to update the RTS SK to current TGE standard. At the time this seemed a risky thing to get involved with, as I've noticed that "Partnerships" on the GG forums ( and I'm speaking of those I've been involved in ) don't tend to last long. It's not an easy thing to do when distance, age and interests can differ so greatly but this is true of the real world as well.

Since I was stalled in developing the game play in "People of the Dawn", I decide "What the heck", I wasn't moving forward enough with my game and perhaps a game related break was just what I needed. I really had nothing to lose! Well despite language differences and distance, Marcos and I found we worked well together. We each brought something to the table and our enthusiasm spurred the other on and kept the project rolling. We had fun. Wonderful.

When the RTS SK update was completed and the appropriate people thanked, we both decided that the experience had been so enjoyable that perhaps, just perhaps, we should work on another project together. Maybe "People of the Dawn" or "Project: 16:16" or...

Something smaller, something we could complete in a reasonable amount of time. And perhaps looking to the future, a project that would update the RTS SK with functionality we could use on our games. A code and art content pack perhaps.

Or better.

How about a mini game that would provide core RTS updates and features for other developers and form a fundamental foundation for RTS game community. Not the usual Content pack but an add on based around a game.

Frog Stop Games and "General Snodgrass' The Last Stand" were born!

We wrote up a concept document outlining the goals and content, submitted it to Derek B. at GG for feedback and the rest as they say, was history. Well not quite. First Derek had a proposal of his own, something along the lines of 'your content pack might go over better if you made it compatible with TGEA - hint, hint'. Well something to that effect anyway. But of course, the RTS SK hasn't been ported to TGEA yet, so how were we going to manage that? Easy, bring on more talented developers and port over the kit. With that done, we could safely begin development of our mini game.

We are now four strong (one artist and three developers), the first phase of the project has been completed and being tested but we're short of artists to develop the assets required for "The Last Stand". So if you're Designer, Modeler, Texture artist, Rigger or Animator, drop me a line :)

And so here I am. Or should I say, here WE are. With my real life job having taken over my life for the last 4 months, it's nice to be back into the swing of development. I manage 14 very talented designers, concept artists and animators in my real life job and it can be lot like herding cats and just as exhausting. "The Last Stand" will be my break from all that and even though it looks like it will be a lot of hard work it, I also know it will be a whole lot of fun.

Working with my Business Partner Marcos will make it so.

Until next time www.crowtrees.ca/temp/crowSig.jpg

Awesome. Immediately makes me think of the classic "Zulu" with Michael Caine among others.

Sounds like a very interesting project the James..

Cool features I would like to see integrated (built in) in RTS kit are:
- Adjustable Turn base system (yes, I know). ;-)
- Fog Of War

People of the Dawn, rules them all! ;-P

Is your game based on the zulu war and Rorkes drift?

My great great (great?) grandad (John William Fielding) was at Rorkes drift... he got a VC :)

I was thinking about making an game a couple of years ago based on it... mainly from an education POV.
