Hey guys, just wanted to get an opinion on our updated Hud. removed some unneeded bits replaced it with others.

this is the red teams version (not its a mockup), the actual health bars e.t.c arent working on this angled look yet)

Anyone know how to make angled healthbars/stamina bars ?

Also a way to make certain elements move as you run e.t.c

Do you like the bended look ? compared to a flat look such as

I really like this hud now :]

HUD looks hot. We created an angled health bar once using an "empty" bitmap covered by a "full" bitmap - then showing only a percentage of the "full" bitmap based on the health level. It seems like that technique would work here too.

That is awesome. It gives a LOT more atmosphere with the rounded hud. Hope you get the health bar implimented ok!

I like it.. it's out of the box thinking with the warped look.

I find it disorienting. It makes me dizzy and sick. I would not be able or want to play this game with the bended look. I don't get motion sickness playing games so I'm not sure why this is.

I don't really like the bended one, although the concept is great. I think it will end up being a bit disorienting, but with that kind of thing the only way to be sure is to test it out. One thing I like the command hud on the left is smaller on the bended one than on the non-bended. Maybe have the command hud the nice, small size on the non-bended one.

Bended looks better, but without the dark areas at top and bottom, I assume those are just artifacts of the mockup, right? Looking sharp!

IMHO, the bended look really makes the game look unique. Sure, it's metroid prime-ish (not a bad thing), but comparing both screenshots...the bottom one looks 'standard'...while the top one gives a definite feeling about being there. Then again, that's just based on static screens. Maybe you could post short videos with both Uis to compare the feel? Just a thought

Tricky. I can't quite tell the real difference because of the size difference between the red and blue command part(Defend, Attack, etc). I'd have to see both with the same size to know for sure. Something is definitely better about the top one, but it is kinda hard to tell what it is. I do like the idea of looking thru the helmet. The bottom looks fantastic though... in case you can't get the top to work at least you know the hud looks awesome.

Isn't it funny how you never imagine at the begining of the game's development that you'll be dealing with details like this.

I like the bended one as well. In order to get the size of the health bars etc... I'm fairly certain you can do some fairly easy math to get the projected size of something from 3D to 2D. I once wrote a calculator program to do just that. Can't remember the formula I used right off hand but I derived it by video taping a ruler with a zoom of 1 and then comparing it at X distance away with the same thing Y distance away. This way I was able to get the ratio of screen size to true 3D depth. Anyway, that was a long time ago when I did that. You could probably use some sort of matrix transformation as well.

I like the bended one. Also the red hud is for the Red team, while the blue hud is for the Blue team (obviously :P) for everyone to know. I think the red looks ok, and in this case it is simply just a color choice preference. I like the blue "better" but the red doesn't look bad. Red huds have been in other games such as UT2004 as an indication to what team you are on.

The top one is less in your face, but the bottom one is more clear, both in terms of control legibility, and if you look closely, the terrain and foliage is better lit. I think that the RED hud with blending is killing some of your detail, but you might have more success with a different color.

My 2-cents.

it wasn't the red color that hurt my eyes, just something about the bend is making me sick. I've come back to this screenshot many times this morning and each time I look at the screenshot my stomache turns, I feel nausous, and I get dizzy and sick. I can't look at it for more than 5-10 seconds. I can't explain it.

personally, i liked the bent one quite a bit better.

for people like Joshua, who cant use the bent style, possibly have an option to switch the hud styles?

I'm a fan of the bent one as well. If you're wearing some sort of helmet, you don't have full field of view, the UI should reflect that.
