Community Contest #9 - Multiplayer

by Geoff Beckstrom · 04/24/2012 (11:06 am) · 52 comments

Okay - we had a bit of a disappointing drop off in entries for the Military Training contest. However - with the success on the Breakout winner and the Military Training winners we know that playable entries is something we want to do.

Before coming to GG, I spent 6 years working for a small e-learning company that developed Microsoft Office training courses. We had a group of 8-12 guys that would log on for lunch every day to play Call of Duty 2. We would play a couple rounds of capture the flag, followed by a couple of rounds of team death match. Internally tracked, cumulative running leader boards made this some serious inter office competition. I miss the camaraderie and competition of those lunch time battles but it brings me to a great contest idea.

"Give us the best multiplayer experience for a small group of 4-8 (maybe even up to 12-15) people"

That's it. You take it from there. Military theme - ok, Fantasy theme - ok, My Little Pony theme - hmmm, well, maybe not the best chance of winning. Team death match, death match, strategy, again that is up to you.

We are not expecting polished or bug free entries. We do want to be able to launch and play the game but we know what Beta and even Alpha stages of a game look like.

So here are the dirty details:

Plenty of time - entries aren't due for a month - Friday May 25th.

To encourage more entries - there will be a winner (or winning team if you pair up) for every 4 entries. If 12 people put up their stuff - we will give away 3 awards.

Game On!

I think this is a great idea, Gibby and I are looking to get involved in this.

@Gilbert - We had 5 of us hop into your military training game two weeks ago and that was part of what helped me think of the multiplayer contest theme. I would LOVE to see you advance on that game because it is a really good start.

However - it would not be fair to everyone else if you were to win two consecutive awards based on the same entry.

So I hope to see developed versions of ArmyGuys with multiplayer and you are welcome to submit that for feedback from everyone but if you want to be considered for another prize it will need to be a new entry.

Finally to all - as of yet we have not put a limit (1 time/1 time per year or 6 months, etc) on winning. That may come in the future depending on what will be best for everyone involved.

I understand. How about a fantasy MMO?

Also, can a friend of mine who is experienced in modding Torque games, but does not have a license of his own still help with scripting? In effect, he'd be competing to win himself a license.

@Gilbert: YES YES YES! Have him download the trial. Getting new people into Torque is one of the main reasons for these contests.

It sounds like this is going to be a great contest - I can't wait to see and play everyone's entries!

It's a shame I can't use Army Guys. My idea for that was for a purely multiplayer class-based shooter, and would have been awesome for this contest, but I understand how weak it would be for the same project to be entered to win twice. I had an idea for a fantasy MMO, but I'm not sure how fun that would be for just 8 players... I guess if Age of Time could pull it off...

One other point - with the deadline being 4 Friday's away. We encourage you take advantage of the 3 upcoming community power hours (May 4, 11, and 18) to submit working plans or early game drafts for feedback!

Everyone I've asked to help me so far has had exams this month. I fear you might have picked another unfortunate time for a contest. I'll still do what I can with whatever help I can get but I have a bad feeling about this.

Not sure i have the time at the 4. may. So i think i will put in some pics of the developing of my contest game. I used a prototyped game i did in the 1.1 version. I made a new level only for the contest. Also i was use some of my demolition pack kits, and content of the upcoming kit i be at working on. The game calls -Invade Borg- and it is made for 2 teams. The teams have to capture the enemy flags/basis. At Moment i polish all the models and content and also the code. Hope you like the pics :)

Ughh. Once again, I don't get the logic. What does this gain GG or anyone who won or potentially won, and why is a doc guy spec'ing a contest (which if they are like any doc guys I have worked with the last 20 years (civ or mil.. ALL inclusive) don't have a single clue or care to know about a clue about what goes into making anything... simple or hard?)

Spend your time making a better product and documenting that.

@Jeff - GG gains the opportunity to engage with its community and a number of community members have been able to buy full engine licenses and/or add on packs as a result of their creativity and efforts. GG also gains the opportunity for a clueless doc guy to engage programmers and artists at a level he wouldn't normally have an opportunity to do so(which he happens to quite enjoy).

If you have a specific issue you would like to discuss directly like a man with 20 years of professional experience you can reach me (or anyone else here at GG) by email. If you simply needed to vent some frustration I hope this outlet has helped. However if you choose to continue to make personal attacks in lieu of constructive criticism or suggestions your future comments will be deleted.

I look forward to seeing the creative entries from those members who have mentioned their positive interest in this contest!

Quoted simply because I think this is the best possible reply and I 100% agree with all of it.

Made a blog post for the idea I had for an entry. www.garagegames.com/community/blogs/view/21683
Dunno how far I'll go with this. Depends on how much support I get I suppose. Everyone I've talked to so far has exams coming up and can't do anything before the deadline.

I've already got mine, but I won't enter it. Put it together over about 4 months last year, so I've got more than the one month time invested....

*sigh*

Bad news folks, I cannot solve my silly AI issue, and since I will be out of town for 2 and a half weeks on a field research project, I will not be able to enter this contest.

Best of luck to all who are in the contest, and maybe I'll be able to get in next time.

Happy to show you my contest entry. i still finished the game today. You can download here: http://www.game3d.ch/invadeborg.htm

It is a multiplayer shooter for 2 teams in capture the flag stile. One player can host a game and others can join the party via Lan or internet. Maybe not everything is perfect, about is made within 4 weeks. I used some parts from a older game, i never finished. Also i was use some of my content packages. UAISK is also in use for the robots. You may need a fast PC, if you host a game. I still run it with Amd Phenom 4 core and ati 5770 and 8gb ram, on a W7 64 bit system.

At least, this is my first game i finished:)

Enjoy:)

Ok so I've finally got a prototype worth submitting, despite nearly being foiled at the last minute by a show stopping bug :/
I wanted to get so much more into it but with work commitments and occasionally needing to sleep I had to drop the severable limbs, battering ram and ballista turrets :( so the defenders are a bit lacking in toys to play with. But hopefully you'll get the idea of where I wanted to go with this, and hopefully it'll still be fun to play.
Oh and you'll have to excuse the bad programmer 3D art too.

Ebonixs also worked with me on this, and did the 2D art, some map design, script and a whole lotta testing :)

the following video is more of a quick way to show how to use a catapult than as a show off. (a picture shows a thousand words)

I'll also tell you about the controls here as the download is seriously lacking in documentation :)

E = use item (catapult)
mousescroll change weapons. apart from that standard torque controls.
walls and the gate are damaged by the catapult and very much more slowly by sword.

The object is for the attacking team to storm the keep and raise the flag at the top.. (just move close to the flag and it will raise)
The Defending team must stop them. (again move close to the flag to stop it or kill any attackers near the flag)

any comments/critism welcomed :)
John
