Torque X 4.0 CEV - RC phase is now on!

by Giuseppe De Francesco · 01/20/2011 (2:44 pm) · 123 comments

Hey guys,

Welcoming the return of GarageGames I'll add more good news for today: Torque X 4.0 CEV Beta phase ends today, so the current CEV product steps in the RC (Release Candidate) phase.

In a few hours all CEV users will find the 4.0 in their project list (www.xp-dev.com/projects) to start playing with it.

The Torque X Builder (TXB) for the 4.0 CEV is on the 4.0 CEV Trac website (trac2.xp-dev.com/TX4CEV) along with the first VS2010 templates. More will come in the next days. The 3D editor is still in progress so keep an eye on the Trac website for the latest news.

Please use the Trac website for bugs submission as well, as the Mantis website was only for the Beta. From now on Torque X 4.0 CEV editors updates will be published on the Trac website only and the bugs will only be accepted on the Trac website.

GarageGames has put an end to TX, but the community has not, so the CEV users, now able to deploy on XBLIG using TX 4.0 CEV for XNA 4, will also get (soon I hope) a Windows Phone 7 working environment.

I hope you like this progress ;)

@Giuseppe
I just got a TX license so how can I get into CEV?
Can you send me the details to email. The one in the profile will do.

@Giuseppe
I am considering purchasing TorqueX, but I would like some advice first. I am currently working on a new game that uses the TGB Kart Kit for a simulated third person 3D effect (aka mode7, 2.5d...). Can I recreate this with TorqueX 4.0 CEV? By either modifying the render code (like TGB Kart Kit does) or by using a 3D camera on a 3D plane populated with 2D billboarded sprites?

Hey Alain,
with TX2D you can do any 2.5d game without problems: I'm working myself on a Diablo-like title (see on my website). From a flexibility point of view TX is way better than TGB.

@will, Thanks for the tips. I managed to load the materials from the project folder, but only when the path is something data\images\texture.png. But I still can´t create new materials with the editor. The error happens when it tries to copy the image to the content folder. Notice that when the image is in the content folder I have no problem to create the material. So I always have to copy the texture file to the content folder manually or though VS before creating a new material.

Giuseppe,

I would like to join the CEV project as well.

I do have a quick question: How large of a task is it to move an entire game from TX2D v3.1.4 over to the CEV version? I'm assuming the core engine components are still there in the CEV, but they've been simply modified for optimization.

Thank you,
Jeremy Dains

@Jeremy: your profile doesn't show your email address. Please make it show or just drop me an email ;) To switch on the CEV all you have to do is change the references.

Giuseppe,

I went ahead and enabled my email address to show. I also sent you an email from that address a few hours ago.

That sounds great, I was hoping it wouldn't be a tedious task to switch things over. I'm very glad to hear that. Thank you once again.

Giuseppe,
I too enabled my email address to show and sent you a follow-up email in case that's easier.

Hey Max,just sent you the info, but your email never got here, double check the address... when you copy an email from the profile there is a script adding "null" after the "@" sign as anti robot measure ;)
