- Summary:
- My interest in design started while modding Quake 2. Pretty soon, I realized that it's simply not enough to think up "neat ideas" and expect them to be wholly enjoyable - that leads to novelty, not good design. Modifications, requiring no costs, gave me the freedom to make huge blunders and learn well from my mistakes. While contemporary designers have had a whole career to experiment, I am relatively new to the fray, and so I felt it very important to read up on Ludological matters. Jesper Juul, Ak Jarvinen, Chris Crawford, Eric Zimmerman, Greg Costikyan and Ernest Adams are people I respect most for their work in game theory, and I'm very interested in taking on board and applying what they have to say, even if it seems a little far out for conventional game design! Having studied design and development avidly in my spare time, I'm quietly confident in my abilities. I am currently applying some thoughts about themeless game design to a pet project called "K". It is an abstract 3D shoot 'em up, but its game mechanics aim to model a sense of ambiguous morality, without calling on any form of subject matter.
I am a big lover of independent game development due to the freedom it gives you which is hard to come by in the conventional games industry.
