TGE vs TAT(TSE) File Dialogs

I recently had the opportunity to hang over the shoulder of a TAT (formerly TSE) developer. I found it peculiar that the Load File and Save File dialogs were so different than the ones I use in TGE. The TAT Load File box was particularly hard to look at because it merely had a long list of files in every sub-directory of the example folder. We found an obvious fix and got the TGE dialogs into his TAT source, but I was wondering why there was a change? Are there any underlying benefits of the stock TAT file dialog boxes that I'm unaware of?
