Torque 3D Versioning Questions
by Eric Preisz · in Torque 3D Beginner · 12/20/2012 (8:05 am) · 32 replies
We've released version 2.0 of Torque 3D MIT. Some folks have raised issue with the versioning schema. I remember having a open dialog about this very early on, but I haven't been able to find it, so perhaps someone else know where that happened. Regardless, I'm adding this here so that we have a place to discuss.

@Skipper - We all understand. But there's a paradigm shift. Releases will be more consistent as we move forward.

If the hottest and most contested issue with an official Torque OSS release (master branch update) is an argument over something as trivial as the semantics of version numbering, then... go team! ;)

I had no part in the decision, and personally have no objection to the current choice. Sure it might not feel "conventional", but this is topic that the software industry in general can't come to a consensus on.If the hottest and most contested issue with an official Torque OSS release (master branch update) is an argument over something as trivial as the semantics of version numbering, then... go team! ;)

Or we could just generate a UUID for each incremental update....

LOL - well, I'll have to check my bag - I know I have at least 6 full sets (d4~d20, with a pair of d10 for a set of 7) plus about 10 additional d6 and a few extra d20 floating in there....Or we could just generate a UUID for each incremental update....

Also, you have real dice and that scares me. Video Game RPG players are one thing, but pen and paper, those guys are right up there with serial killers.
Pssst, I also have a bag of dice, but they are currently unregistered with the state.

d%, roll over your SAN. On success subtract one from the version number each release.

Mike: I agree with Ronny, you have no idea how important this is ;).

I'm convinced! One more question from a pedant, though: does the decimal place get used for anything?Mike: I agree with Ronny, you have no idea how important this is ;).

There is no decimal place.

And I would agree that it seems like this is becoming more complicated that it needs to be. Taking possible nightly builds out of the equation (most people don't use those) the majority of the community will see 2.0, 3.0, etc. It is short and concise, sorts well, and conveys the information we set out to, well, convey.
