2011 GarageGames IRC Hour Discussion Thread

First one is on 1/21/2011

This thread is dedicated to all things related to the official GarageGames IRC Hour. Following each session, there will be a short recap posted here by either Michael Perry or one of our site admins. This will also be the thread where you post suggestions for upcoming sessions, and provide feedback on how to improve IRC Hour.

What It Is: IRC Hour is a chance for the community to have real-time discussions about Torque with GarageGames employees and associates. The subject of these talks is to discuss official docs, tutorials, community contribution, engines, and general "going ons". We will be using the IRC channel hosted by MaxGaming OnLine.

Where Is It:
Server: irc.maxgaming.net
Channel: #GarageGames

What It Isn't: Debugging other people's code, marathon one-on-one help sessions, soap-box rants, etc.

Organization: Due to the nature of IRC, patience and civility will be required to maintain order and convey everyone's thoughts. We will be making extensive use of private tells to help field questions to guests, but if there are no guests we can have an open forum.

When: Each session will happen every third Friday, at 3:00 pm (PST).

If the concept proves popular and attendance increases, we may add a second hour in a month. Special occasions will result in a live video stream.

Purpose: Primarily, this will be another great source of feedback that can be used to improve our engines, documentation and the community. Venting directly to an employee, become a part of an official process in Torque, and general back and forth about the issues important to you.

We look forward to seeing everyone in the channel (hosted by MaxGaming OnLine).

Does this work with the program mIRC? I'm new to IRC chat and I can't seem to get irc.maxgaming.net to let me in using it. Should I being using different software? I have it set up to read:
Description: Tourque
IRC Server: irc.maxgaming.net
Ports: 6667

No soap box ranting? It's not IRC without ranting! I mean seriously, who wants to join a chat channel where you're not having someone else's ignorant, completely-out-of-touch-with-reality opinion shoved down your throat while you... waitaminute... \=)

Hmm, can't really offer much help there.

Does that provide insights: thread?

Parker, I did connect to that channel using mIRC today. But then I figured out it's not a freeware and has a trial period, and replaced it with ChatZilla. Handy plugin if you're using Firefox.

Also, 3PM PST... Am I getting it right that it's 1AM in UTC+2 timezone? =)
Oh well, you can't make the whole globe happy at once.

It seams really odd. I can connect to other IRC servers and join channels but I receive a similar error from ChatZilla

[INFO] Connecting to irc://irc.maxgaming.net/ (irc://irc.maxgaming.net/)… [Cancel]
[ERROR] Closing link: (unknown@69.254.25.198) [Unauthorised connection]

Maybe someone else using your current IP was banned from the server? What would be the error message in that case? I'm not an experienced IRC user as well.

I've never used it. I'm usualy not at home during IRC Hour so I hadn't bothered trying before last night. I am attempting from my home computer and have even gone as far as dissabling all firewalls while attempting to connect.

Yeah, the MGT server is iffy at times. I keep pointing out that people can't connect from random locations in the world. One of these years they might be able to fix it ;)

Well, funny stuff, I can't connect from work as well:

Connection to irc://irc.maxgaming.net/ (irc://irc.maxgaming.net/) reset. [Help] Reconnecting in 15 seconds. [Cancel]

ITS_Nick, you should be able to just open mIrc and select maxgaming from the list of available servers. Then just type in #GarageGames to join the room.
(it appears there is a problem with the server at the moment.)

I just tested an iRC iphone app called iRC, by mediaware.sk
It worked fine. I am sure there are other smart phone IRC apps out there too.

^ This could be because you have your username set to a blank?

Not sure if that helps.
