Ragnarok Online

I heard about this game on another forum... it's pretty cool.
http://enweb.ragnarok.co.kr/ open beta right now but I thought some of us designers here would like to see how they've done a blend of a 3d world and some 2d sprites to give it an anime feel.

apparently they've been beta testing for 4 years (not always open) i'm wondering how they've had enough money to maintain the servers that long ;)

It's not abad little game from what I've played of it so far. The translation from Korean to English is a little rough in spots, but not bad. Still, it's a bit intimidating for n00bs given that it's not easy to see how strong some of the wandering monsters are, and you're liable to get yourself killed very quickly trying to level up. Plus, the starting areas seem to be very crowded right now. Whether that's due to them opening it up as a free beta or not, I can't say.

I'll need to play on this one some more, but so far, it's kinda neat.

if you play swordsman the city you start in (Prontera) is EXTREMEELY crowded.
however, you can easily leave and go to some place like Morroc by paying an Acolyte for a warp (700-1,000z is about normal cost)

yeah, a lot of players who don't take the game seriously enough are in there right now because it's free... that's the biggest problem.

I've been playing Ragnarok since the original beta (about a year ago?) Really charming and cute game. I love the sprite based style of the characters, and would love to see more games like this.

As far as gameplay, its about like every other MMORPG out there - you kill stuff, you gain levels, you buy new stuff. I have to say though, the charming animations have kept me interested in this game for much longer than any other game of this genre.

The poor translations are really quite funny (they add to the charm for me) but they have cleaned them up quite a lot since the earlier betas.

Overall good fun as far as MMORPGs go, but still just a super-cute time-sink.

It's still around, their download servers are just not set up to handle the capacity they are getting.
try some of the download mirrors posted at ro.pak0.com/
FilePlanet has it if nothing else works.

16 year old thread, posts a link from a new account. Looks like spam to me. If not, apologies, but as the groundskeeper for this graveyard I try to keep it as clean as possible so the ghosts don't act up.
