Announcing Undead Shadows - a zombie survival game

by Adam Beer · 09/24/2014 (4:56 pm) · 12 comments

I am proud to announce a zombie shooter I have been working on for a little while called Undead Shadows! You must survive non stop waves of zombies and other creatures from sun up till sun down. There are 2 large worlds to choose from; Downtown Quarantine - a modern decaying downtown core of a city that has been quarantined by the military, and Country Cornfields - a foggy rural setting where you must defend a secret military project that has crashed into a local restaurant. As you progress through each round, more and more zombies are thrown at you..until you reach night. As soon as the sun sets, huge spiders come crawling out from the forests to hunt for living flesh.

Killing zombies and spiders will give you money that can be exchanged for items that will help you survive. There is a weapon store that allows you to upgrade your firepower, a hardware store where you can get cheap but effective weapons and a pawn shop that supplies you with handy things to make killing thousands of zombies a bit easier.

I am using T3D 3.5 with a few modifications. The plan is to allow for singleplayer, multiplayer and local co-op. Most of my art assets are from the GG store such as the Zombie Art Pack and the Solider Weapons Pack with some texture modifications to both. I plan to attempt to rework the zombie animations, or hire somebody to do that if my attempts look terrible. I have started a Kickstarter Project to help me fund the artwork I would like to purchase for the game to bump up the quality and feel of most of the level items (cars, props etc.) so if anyone would like to help support this game, consider making a donation there!

This will be my second game that I will be releasing and I learned a ton from the first one. I have already put the game up on Steam Greenlight to start getting an audience and a general idea of interest. I have also posted my game on IndieDB based on a recommendation I got from a friendly Kickstarter-er. So with that all being said, I am juggling marketing and getting the remainder 35% of development completed and its quite the task! Here are some shots and a short trailer I created:

I am trying to finish up the level designs, making a nice HUD and finishing up with the AI scripting. They like to get stuck and run at me in a very straight and orderly fashion - I need to fix that. There is also a 5 page list of other things that I need/want to do but most of them are quick tasks, so my late November release date is a stretch but Ill try! Thanks for reading and please leave your feedback or suggestions! Also again if you could help my out by voting "Yes" on Steam Greenlight and feeling very generous, shoot over some funds on Kickstarter Project to help out with the artwork - as I am just a programmer! Thanks again and looking forward to hearing from everyone!

I'm of the opinion there will never be enough zombie games, so this has my vote! Good luck Adam.

Looks good - but unlike Mich I could pass on the zombies....

When are we getting an alien invasion?

Your goal seems not to be set high and this may only be an alpha demonstration, but even for that, you should bring more effort into it, than just placing some boring default trees that come with stock Torque3D.
There is enough free demo assets out there, for example Ron released his whole work for free.
People judge games mostly by visuals, so you need to present them something nice, otherwise they will not like it.
There is already some people on steam complaining about this.
So if you want to be successful with this project you should consider better visuals and some original new game concept, that has not been there before about a hundred times.

I have to agree with Duion :/. I'd love to see some more innovation - something that will make me play your game rather than any other zombie shooting game out there! I've recently watched a friend play a lot of State of decay, so I've been a bit spoiled for the zombie genre for a little while ;P.

I like zombie games, I'm wondering what are the goals? Is it like kill # number (like in Killing Floor) or like L4D with a start and end point?

What can we do, do we barricade doors and stuff?

Good luck! In the video the flashlight scenes look the best.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I am working on a few features to get some mix into the genre. I am currently tweaking the building system that will allow you to go the the hardware store and grab various supplies and construct blockades, barriers and walls.

The idea of the game will be to really build up your own area for defense and collection over time as as each round passes, more and more zombies and spiders are released. I want to release a gameplay trailer soon that will go over the game in more detail. Ive setup a dev blog on Tumblr to setup an easier access hub for updates and announcements.

Thanks to everyone who added their vote and I hope to keep ya'll updated on the progress!
